When you’re looking for yarn for your latest project, choosing the right colour can be quite difficult – especially if you’re torn between several shades!
There are actually many different types of colour or dye that a yarn can have – see below for more information.
Most yarns only have one colour throughout the ball. These yarns are often coloured with natural or artificial dyes, or sometimes not even dyed at all!
Heathered/tweed yarn is made up of material with flecks of different coloured fibre. This can create a really nice authentic style to your project, particularly for classic aran jumpers, sweaters or cardigans.
Ombre yarn is a variegated (multi-coloured) type of yarn, which tends to have both light and dark shades of one single colour. This creates a really nice effect, often seen in jumpers or cardigans.
Multicoloured, variegated yarn tends to have 2 or more distinct colours, which is great for bright projects such as bags and blankets.
Self-striping yarn is a really cool style, where the yarn has been dyed with different colours – these automatically create different patterns or stripes in your project, making each pattern totally unique.
Finally, marled yarn is created from strands of dyed yarn of different colours, which are then twisted together. These strands can either be of closely related hues, or completely different colours!
