In the 14th century, Dante Alighieri published his classic poem The Divine Comedy. Nine circles of hell were described covering Lust, Gluttony, Greed and Violence amongst others. A deeply religious man, Dante was attempting to describe the various flavours of wickedness and evil which humans must overcome to spiritually reach God.
