If you’ve always wanted a crafting room where you can get some quality time to yourself, why not make your own? Even if it’s just a small room or corner in a busy household, you should always carve out a space where you can work on what you love.
You don’t need a massive budget (or any budget!) to create your own craft corner: all you need is somewhere to sit, a small table or surface, and good lighting. You can either create a whole organisation space for your crafting stash, or you can keep it all tucked away in a bag, box, or suitcase.
A knitting diary
If you’ve got all of your crafting gear on the go, and you’re looking to organise what you already have, why not make a knitting diary? This can include projects that you’re currently working on, other items and equipment that you’re currently using, and details on where everything can be found. You can even use this list to review what you’d like to do next, pick new skills and projects to try out, or decide whether you need extra needles or yarn for a future project.
You can use anything from a small notebook that you keep in your knitting bag, to a large board that you can use to pin important notes on.
A comfortable seat
Gather some blankets, cushions, a footstool – anything you might need to make your crafting corner comfortable to work in. Make sure that you’ve got somewhere to sit that isn’t too cramped or crowded, and choose a good chair where you can potentially sit for hours at a time.
An accessible surface
Any flat surface is suitable – a crafting desk, side table, set of drawers, or a larger kitchen table can be used to work on your larger knitting projects, or even double as a storage place.
A place to socialise
Getting your own space is important, but make sure that your crafting corner is positioned so you can easily join in for times when you have friends or family over. The most important bits of your crafting corner (seating, projects you’re working on, etc.) should be easily portable for these occasions.
Plenty of storage
Classic items for storage include bags, drawers, cupboards, and cabinets. Measuring tapes, ribbons and buttons can always be stored in cute jars and tubes – these can be decorated with colourful bows, ribbons, and ties to separate each one clearly.
A great idea is to have the option of hiding your ongoing projects from view. Bags and boxes of yarn can be stored beneath chairs and small tables to keep your crafting corner looking tidy.
Other ideas
- Radio/record player – put some of your favourite music on as you knit!
- Have some of your work on display – this can be great as a visual reminder if you tend to forget about projects that are unfinished, or you can use this idea to show off your finished ones on display. Why not include a bookshelf, cabinet, or picture frames to decorate your crafting corner?
- Colour – any colour scheme can work here, from bright vibrant shades to gentle, pastel tones. You can even use decorations to reflect your chosen colour scheme: old photographs, paintings, newspaper prints, etc.
- Smell – why not use a gentle, soothing fragrance to complete the atmosphere? Classic scents like lavender, pine cones, and vanilla are always a strong choice for making your crafting corner the ideal place to relax and unwind.
